It is wonderful to learn about the amazing programs at our fingertips, but I am concerned about my knowledge base for each. I would like to know if anyone has matching feelings about all of this new technology: I am aware of the programs we have access to, but I just don't know how to use them. I feel stuck, and truthfully at this point it would be quite difficult to use a program in my classroom because I really don't know much about them. Help..does anyone feel this way too?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"19993879","dateCreated":"1265761797","smartDate":"Feb 9, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"sarahlandsiedel","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/sarahlandsiedel","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/ed530wilkes.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/19993879"},"dateDigested":1532254327,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Know and Understand","description":"I would like to know what educational practicies I can use in my learning support class. I currently work with students on prepartion for the PSSA's in the area of mathematics. I would like to incorporate some project based learning experiences into my classroom. I find that just teaching to the test is extremly difficult for students to grasp as well as not being very interesting. How can I get my students to understand how to solve problems on the test and to enjoy learning about it?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"19858131","dateCreated":"1265511524","smartDate":"Feb 6, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"ED530_Ruppert","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ED530_Ruppert","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/ed530wilkes.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/19858131"},"dateDigested":1532254327,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"know & understand","description":"I would like to know how I can start incorporating technology into my classroom immediately. I am a 1st year math teacher teaching 8th grade. I only have an overhead machine, no smartboard or projector. We have access to a computer room but am not sure what I can do with 8th graders there. We are assigned the room once a 6 day cycle. I want to take advantage of the room & the existing technology, I just don't know where to start. Are 8th graders too old for study island?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"20038461","body":"i feel that study island is a program that works well for younger students because they still don't really know that it is a PSSA prep device.
\nI do not know much about computer programs with math but what about incoorporating project based learning! I am thinking that eight grade will need to know area, perimeter, and some geometry so what about having your students create a model\/diagram of their dream home or room? They could make it any shape, can have anyting in it, but they would have to measure all aspects of it so things in the room (furniture, desk, play area) fit.
\nThat was a tough one but hopefully that thought sparks more ideas for you.","dateCreated":"1265842818","smartDate":"Feb 10, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"jessica.gribbin","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jessica.gribbin","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"19578177","dateCreated":"1265046963","smartDate":"Feb 1, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"jstiefel","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jstiefel","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/ed530wilkes.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/19578177"},"dateDigested":1532254327,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Know and understand?","description":"I would like to learn more about educational technology and how to make the tools effective in my classroom. \nMy students are also less engaged in the learning enviornment of today. The first article we read last week really hit home! I have a student working with Fast ForWord (mentioned in the article) and I have seen major improvements with math, reading, and communication skills! I just posted my powerpoint about Vygotsky and I mentioned social interaction a lot! Students socializing in something we all can do in our rooms with minimal materials and technology that engage students to learn; even if they don't know it!","dateCreated":"1265147333","smartDate":"Feb 2, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"jessica.gribbin","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jessica.gribbin","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"20063171","body":"Jstiefel,

\nI found your post very interesting. I agree with you that it is very difficult to engage the students. I am also constantly competing with cell phones, gaming systems, ipods, etc. A few months ago, I got so annoyed at this, that I decided to think of ways to incorporate this problem into my class. I teach high school Health and Physical Education. In my health classes, we did a fitness and nutrition project that was based around today's technology. The students did an investigation on the impact of technology on today's youth (obesity levels, sedentary lifestyle, etc.). Then they had to find ways to use these technologies to solve the same problems. A group that focused on ipods presented a fitness program that uses the ipod to track exercise routines. Another group focused on gaming systems and presented the new Wii games that involve fitness. The project engaged the students because it was relevant to them. As Jessica mentioned, social interaction is also important. This project initiated lots of discussion and social interaction in my classroom. Maybe you could come up with some way to incorporate these technologies in your American Government class. Instead of competing with them, maybe there is a way to use them to engage your students.","dateCreated":"1265898664","smartDate":"Feb 11, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"laurenfrederick","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/laurenfrederick","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
