He felt the traditional schools were stifling the child’s own curiosity and zest for learning by the strict structure of a classroom as well as the ingrained attitude of ‘teaching’. He than turned to an alternative method of teaching the child by removing the child from that structured environment – to the home.
This is from Eric Ruppert. I loved your presentation on Holt. I loved how he challenged the established school system and decided to turn it upside down by reinventing it. I found his studies presented in your presentation fascinating – I especially liked the term “modern mass education.” As a first year teacher I can appreciate this term and I can almost sense his frustration. I teach math and so many of the kids I see in my 8th grade math class seem “pushed through” by previous teachers. I can see why home school is so appealing. The children can learn at their own pace without the rigidness of the school classroom with all the rules. At home the children feel more in control. I think the students distain teachers because they view teachers as an authoritarian figure who needs to be overthrown. So many students comment “they hate school.” It’s disheartening. The teachers in turn respond back by clamping down and not allowing any freedom due to the fact they will lose classroom control. It’s really a viscous cycle. I have 2 students who are now in my classroom who were home schooled up to last year and they are light years ahead of their classmates. They always want to work ahead. I get the since they are frustrated at the traditional teaching model the public school system employees as they see it as a hindrance to their ability to learn more – it simply slows them down.
Michael W. She was one of the founders of curriculum mapping, which is a comprehensive method of collaborating what teachers actually teach in the classroom. To say that we teach the "standards" is too broad of a statement. Curriculum mapping is a way for teachers to actually record specifically what they teach. The maps are then used to coordinate curriculum within a school or district both across the curriculum, all teachers at grade level teaching the same concepts, and from one grade to the next. Curriculum mapping has been implemented into both the Learning Focused program and PA Sept. of Ed. SAS.
