Finally, there is a document that I added as a brief summary of the presentation.
Madeline Hunter PowerPoint (Candelario). This PowerPoint Presentation describes the process of direct instruction as developed by Madeline Hunter. It describes and defines the necessary steps to ensure student understanding. Hunter was a pioneer for her time. Her methods are still used today and can be applied to any 21st century classroom. Please view this presentation in "presentation mode" or you will miss all of the fun bells and whistles! Also make sure that you are connected to the internet before viewing so that you are able to click on the hyperlinks which are embedded within the PowerPoint. These websites provide important statistical facts based on research done by educational professionals and were too large and valuable to include in a small PowerPoint. Thank you and I hope you enjoy!
John Dewey Powerpoint (Getz) John Dewey philosophy is based on instrumentalism which is brought about from pragmatic theory. Dewey believes that students will learn from experience and hands on material and they way teachers are teaching with lecture and note taking is not needed and won't help the students. He believes if you give the students a tool to achieve an experience then they will also have that tool for their future.
Michael W. Apple. He sets out to define the Conservative Modernization Movement, a movement which he feels has grave consequences because of the hidden political agenda which takes the focus off the educational process (how children learn) and refocuses education onto this hidden agenda.
John Caldwell Holt tried to reform the school systems using his theories of how a child learns. He felt the traditional schools were stifling the child’s own curiosity and zest for learning by the strict structure of a classroom as well as the ingrained attitude of ‘teaching’. He than turned to an alternative method of teaching the child by removing the child from that structured environment – to the home.
David Warlick PowerPoint Presentation (Frederick). David Warlick, a 30 year educator, noticed that today's students are different. In order to reach today's students, we need to incorporate technology into education. We need to redefine literacy in the 21st Century. He created "The Landmark Project" which provides free technology tools for teachers. Please view the handout for information on useful resources.
George Siemens (Shorb) is a current presenter and facilitator in the field of educational technology and learning in the digital age. His learning theory on connectivism is becoming a well-accepted model for how learning has changed with the use of technology. He states the ability to obtain knowledge through sophisticated networks is more important than possessing the knowledge oneself.
Carl Bereiter is a constructivist whose educational contributions are profiled in Fifty Modern Thinkers in Education. He is a researcher at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. Beth Barto
Howard Gardner (D. Byler) is the founder of the belief in multiple intelligences. He is a current teacher at Harvard University. His belief in multiple intelligences developed from his initial research, on a psychological level, into intelligence itself. Interestingly enough, his theory is not that widely accepted in the world of psychology. However, it was embraced overwhelmingly by the world of education. So much, in fact, that he has written books on how multiple intelligences can be used to further and improve education. He is a very influential man in the world of education and has been honored world-wide for his continuing work in this realm.
Robert Gagne PowerPoint Presentation (Byler). The presentation gives a brief background of Robert Gagne and gives a brief summary of his most famous theory, the nine events of instruction.
Robert J. Marzano, PhD, is cofounder and CEO of Marzano Research Laboratory in Englewood, Colorado. Throughout his years in the field of education, he has become a speaker, trainer, and author of more than 30 books and 150 articles on topics such as instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention. His books include Designing & Teaching Learning Goals & Objectives, District Leadership That Works, Designing & Assessing Educational Objectives, Making Standards Useful in the Classroom, and The Art and Science of Teaching. His practical translations of the most current research and theory into classroom strategies are internationally known and widely practiced by both teachers and administrators. He received a bachelor's degree from Iona College in New York, a master's degree from Seattle University, and a doctorate from the University of Washington.
I had not heard of this person or his theories before doing this presentation. Dr. Marzano and his company will come to your district and lecture. The many sites I found seemed to center around in-service days for the faculty. Dr. Marzano also has over thirty books available to purchase. He follows a protocal to help in teacher effectiveness. That link can be found here, http://www.iobservation.com/Marzano-Suite/Protocol/.
The original PowerPoint of Jerome Bruner was modified in an effort to comply with the PowerPoint rubric limits, as stated in the course syllabus. However, Dr. Bruner has been an amazing influence on the way we view learning and education today. He has been such an innovator that I would encourage anyone interested in education to investigate him further. He is currently 94 years old and works at NYU as a researcher.
